BUDWEIS (České Budějovice)
This beautiful, administrative capital of South Bohemia has a current population of 90000 people. This royal town was founded in 1265 by the Bohemian king Poemysl Otakar II. Parts of its Gothic fortification walls have been preserved to this day. The town square is one of the largest in Europe. Almost all of the houses lining the square have arcades and in the centre stands Baroque Samson's fountain, which was built in 1727. Other architectural monuments are the Black Tower, 72 meters high with excellent views, the baroque Town hall from 1730 and the Church of St. Nicolas. This town is also known as the starting point for the oldest railway in the Hapsburg's monarchy. The horse-drawn railway Eeské Budijovice - Linz opened in 1832.
České Budějovice is the home-town of world famous Budweiser Beer and the factory manufacturing pencils and writing aids Koh-i-noor (Hardmuth).
České Budějovice can be the starting point for trips to Hluboká nad Vltavou (11 km north with its famous pseudo-Gothic chateau), Český Krumlov (20 km south, UNESCO heritage site), Holašovice-Historical Village Reservation (15 km west, UNESCO heritage site).
