SPORT PROGRAMS
Sport plays a major role in the lives of Czech people. The quality of sports in general and sport facilities throughout the Czech Republic are improving dramatically. During 2005 the Czech Republic hosted many International-sporting events, for instance, the European Championship women Basketball U20.
The main sports in the Czech Republic are football, ice hockey and tennis. The Czech Republic has excelled itself frequently in the past and is the former Olympic gold medalists and World Champions in ice hockey. The Czech Republic is bronze medailist of the European Football Championship EURO 2004 in Portugal. Czech sportsmen and women such as Ivan Lendl, Martina Navrátilová, Dominik Hašek, Jaromír Jágr, Pavel Nedvěd (holder of Golden ball award for the best football player 2003), Karel Poborský, Tomáš Rosický, Roman Šebrle (current Decathlon world record holder, 1st to top the magic 9000 point barrier), Tomáš Dvořák (3times Decathlon world champion) and Jan Železný (3times Olympic games winner at the Javelin) are known internationally in their sports.
Czech minority sports such as rugby, handball, basketball, golf, softball etc. are increasing rapidly in popularity. The Czech Republic finished 1st at the European women championship in basketball.
