Terezín

Terezín is a town near Litoměřice on the River Ohoe about 50 km from Prague. The Emperor Joseph II founded the town in 1780 as a Late Baroque fortress intended to defend Bohemia from the northwest. It was named in honour of the Empress Maria Theresa. The Small Fortress was converted into a prison at the beginning the 19th century. During the Second World War the whole town was turned into a Jewish ghetto and the concentration camp was established in the Small Fortress. Around 160,000 prisoners passed through this place, 36,000 of which died. In front of the Small Fortress there is a National Cemetery memorial with the graves of 30,000 victims of Nazism.
